Hello, My name is Jonathan Shoff, owner of Shoff Accounting. Welcome to my first ever blog post. Here I plan to share some of my background and how it relates to my current business.
I was born and raised in the Auburn/Opelika area of Alabama. It is unique in the fact that it is a college town, home of Auburn University. College Football is huge at Auburn. It is at times extremely successful at defeating its opponents (other times, not so much). I enrolled at Auburn right after high school and graduated with a degree in Accounting in 2009.
Soon after graduating I began my career path that got me to where I am today. I started working at a local accounting firm right after finishing school. Even though I was gaining a ton of valuable experience, six months into the job I was laid off. Back then it was still the era of the recession. At the time I was disappointed, but looking back I was fortunate to have had the job even though it was cut short. I have always wanted to be an entrepreneur, and being laid off opened the door to far more opportunities than I ever imagined.
In late 2010, soon after being laid off, I knew just enough about running an accounting business to be dangerous, so I opened my own firm. I received a few clients right from the start and figured things out as I went. One of the clients I received soon after starting my firm was my good friend from childhood, Stephen Devries. His photography business was in its early stages and he wanted me to help him out on the financial side of his business.
Not long after opening my own firm I received an opportunity to be a part of the leadership of several startups over the next few years. Since I did not have a ton of accounting clients I was able to run my firm part-time and take on the opportunity that was presented to me.
I gained a lot of experience in being involved in those startups. Even though I really wanted at least one of them to take flight, none of them really got off the ground. At least not enough to keep going. In September of 2015, I took on my accounting firm on full time. When I told my friend and client, Stephen Devries, that I was making the move to build my firm he gave me several referrals, all of which were creatives.
In July of 2017, I chose to start specializing in providing accounting services to business leaders in creative industries. This has been greatly beneficial for both me and my clients. From my experience working with creatives, I am confident that I can make their businesses run as efficiently as possible, and make sure they are in the loop with all of their financial information.
